27 arrested for drunken driving

During the week of March 26 through April 1, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunken driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.

During the week of March 26 through April 1, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunken driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 368 DUI arrests compared with 344 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Puna, 4; Ka‘u, 1; Kona, 9; and South Kohala, 1.

There have been 365 major accidents so far this year compared with 342 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.7 percent.

So far this year, there were seven official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with six during the same period last year, an increase of 16.7 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
